A general donkey 'MOT'

Pachna's embedded chain headcollar

The Sanctuary has always given help to donkeys across the island and we have now begun to visit villages to provide hoof trimming, dental checks, a general donkey 'MOT' and advice. It takes a bit of organising getting owners to bring their donkeys to the village centre where our vet, farrier and Welfare Officer are waiting. A record is kept of each donkey treated so that, if necessary, we can visit the individual owner more frequently if they need our help. Not only does this benefit the donkey but we are seeing an increase in the number of calls we get asking for advice or letting us know where there is a donkey in need.

Here are before and after photographs of a donkey reported to us. The donkey was tethered by a chain headcollar which had become embedded in the skin on its nose. We tracked down the owner then removed the chain and treated the very sore and infected wound. After only a few days the wound was clean and healing extremely well. We gave the owner a soft headcollar as well as some advice and some medication for the wound and, although the donkey has moved on from the area, the owner was very grateful for our help.

Another achievement is that local Government vets are now invited to come along to our village outreach 'gatherings'. This is really encouraging as we are able to educate the vets on donkey care and by meeting our vet, they know they have someone to call for advice on donkey health matters.
