A bitter sweet summer

Our two oldest donkeys, Narky and Lofou (who were 50 and 48 years old respectively), both passed away. Our dear mule Mavris, who was 40 has also left us, so has Glenn. A much loved colleague of ours, Frank, sadly passed away too.
The wretched economic situation has resulted in a drop in income this year despite a record number of visitors this year. What with VAT going up and costs rising, this has had a big effect on the costs of our feed and medications which, of course, are vital for our donkeys.
All of this put a real dampener on our spirits but we’ve still got our beloved donkeys to look after and as they say, ‘the show must go on’!

Many thanks for all your interest in our work and our donkeys here in Cyprus. Without our supporters help we certainly would not be able to continue not only caring for our donkeys, but many others on the island.

Yet another busy month! Our Santorini campaign, which has gone out on all of The Donkey Sanctuary websites, is getting a good response from the public. If you haven’t done so already, please have a read through and join our petition. Don’t forget to tell your friends too as the more support we get the more chance there is of improving the conditions for the donkeys and mules that work so hard there.
May 10 Manager’s Monthly Update

Maybe that’s why the donkeys hang on to their winter coats for so long? They have been losing hair gradually which is pleasing the birds who often grab bits for building nests before we dispose of it!
You may have read about our two latest arrivals, Roberto and Lindy (Tied to a Truck and Living Amongst the Metal). Roberto is such a big handsome and friendly chap. While he was in our Isolation area he was always eager to say hi to the staff and get a fuss. As he is quite a bit overweight we have taken him to our ‘Fat Camp’ section at our Sterako Holding Base. Hopefully he will drop a few kilos and then join one of the other groups.
